Mining Engineering @ WASM
WASM Mining Engineering offers a variety of postgraduate courses ranging from the Graduate Diploma in Mining, which is meant for non-mining graduates who wish to gain postgraduate qualifications in mining, to Master of Science by course work and research degrees, including PhD. Also available are the Graduate Certificate in Mining Geomechanics and the Graduate Certificate in Mine Planning and Design which are aimed at mid-career professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge and career advancement. The objective of the Master of Engineering Science (Mine Planning and Design) is to provide knowledge of the concepts, methodologies and tools that are necessary to design and plan safe and efficient mining operations. The Master of Engineering Science in Mining Geomechanics provides the necessary skills to apply modern principles of geomechanics in mine design and production. The Master of Engineering Science (Mining) by Coursework and the Master of Philosophy (Mining Engineering) by Research are courses designed to enable students to develop balanced skills in mining engineering.
Holders of the Graduate Diploma in Mining can expect professional recognition as graduate mining engineer to senior engineer and ultimately positions in senior management depending on experience and ability. The holders of the Master of Science can expect greater opportunities for leadership roles in industry and technical project work.
WASM Mining Engineering postgraduate courses provide a balanced approach to both the theoretical and practical aspects of mining. The Graduate Diploma in Mining and the Master of Science in Mining provide a knowledge of the core areas of surface mining, underground mining, geomechanics, drill and blasting technology, mine design, and mine finance and accounting. The Professional Graduate Certificates and Master of Engineering Science courses provide students with advanced knowledge in the respective areas. They are intended for mining professionals seeking to prepare themselves for senior technical roles in the mining industry.
Industry Recognition
WASM's Graduate Diploma in Mining has been recognised by the industry as offering a formal qualification in mining for non-mining graduates. The Professional Graduate Certificates and Masters in Engineering Science programs are recognised as providing specialist knowledge for mining engineers. The Minerals Council of Australia, as part of their national continuing education program, also supports WASM's graduate coursework programs for mineral industry professionals.
Opportunities for International Students
International graduates with acceptable competence in English and a non-mining science or engineering degree or equivalent may obtain a formal qualification in mining engineering through the one year Graduate Diploma in Mining, which qualifies for entry into the Master of Engineering Science (Mining) by coursework/research. This study combination provides a postgraduate qualification in mining engineering over two years of study on a regional campus, which is advantageous for those seeking local career opportunities.
Other post graduate study options for suitably qualified overseas students, include courses in Mine Planning and Geomechanics may be studied in non-resident basis by attending the block release intensive sessions offered twice a year. These courses are offered on a part time basis.
Enrolment details are available through Curtin's International Office.
