Admission Requirements
English competence
Curtin requires all applicants to demonstrate general competence in English irrespective of their admission qualifications. This is normally achieved through a mark of at least 50 in either TEE English or English Literature. Other approved English qualifications will be accepted and a list is available through the:

WASM course prerequisites
Students with TEE Applicable Mathematics in various combinations with Calculus, Physics and/or Chemistry can apply (through TISC) for a WASM Engineering course under a common TISC code and, depending on their final TER and subject combination, can choose their specific course upon enrolment.
Students with Discrete Mathematics and/or Applicable Mathematics (without Physics or Chemistry) can apply for entry to the Bachelor of Science or a bachelor of Surveying course. Information about course prerequisites can be found in the Courses pages or through the Curtin Online Handbook.
Once accepted into WASM, students can upgrade their course from the Science degree to the prestigious Engineering degree, usually after one year of successful study.
It is also possible to swap between discipline areas in the early years of study since many subjects are common.
Don't have all the prerequisites for your preferred course?
WASM offers a wide range of courses leading to careers in the minerals industry to cater for students with differing levels of academic preparation at TEE level.
While the successful completion of any course provides a career entry into the industry, with satisfactory performance, there are clear pathways to transfer from Bachelor of Science to the Bachelor of Engineering course within the WASM course structure.
Thus, if you do not have the required prerequisites for the course of your choice, you should initially select a course at the appropriate level and upgrade during your undergraduate studies.
Prospective students may wish to contact the School to discuss their study objectives and how they can meet their academic goals.
Mathematics Bridging courses
Preparation studies for matriculation for students not meeting entry, or who have either failed or not completed some of the "preferred" prerequisite subjects for their desired course, may wish to undertake bridging courses to upgrade their academic preparation. For example, those students whose calculus background is deficient can undertake a short bridging course at Curtin in Perth, which runs for four weeks in February. The cost is approximately $440, which includes course material. You do not have to be enrolled at Curtin to enrol in this course.

Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER)
School leavers must obtain a sufficient TER for entry into a chosen course. As a guide, the minimum Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) TER for double degrees is 85, for engineering degrees 80 and for science degrees 70. However these figures are simply a guide and applicants should refer to the TISC website for accurate TER cut-offs.

Applicants who completed TEE prior to 2007
Applicants who qualified for admission by successfully completing the TEE before 2007 remain eligible for admission to the University. Applicants who completed the TEE in 2006 and have not attempted any post-secondary studies are also considered.
Applicants transferring from other tertiary institutions
Entry for these students will be considered on the basis of their total academic record - both their school and tertiary performance. Applications should be made through TISC, telephone (08) 9318 8000.
Mature age Tertiary Entrance Examination
Further information on this method of entry can be found on the Future Students website.
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test is an alternative method of mature age entry into the University. It is designed to access a range of competencies commonly considered important for success in tertiary study. However, for entry to a particular course, students are still required to have studied the nominated prerequisite TEE subjects or equivalent.
The STAT consists of two parts:
- STAT Multiple Choice Test - 70 multiple choice verbal and quantitative questions, duration two hours.
- STAT Written English Test - This test consists of two essays and is of one hour duration. Part A covers current affairs issues that invite argument; Part B asks the candidate to write from a more personal point of view. Each section gives a choice of two topics.
To meet Curtin's entry requirements through the STAT, applicants must sit the multiple-choice test and the written English test in the same year and achieve an acceptable level of performance in both parts. Scores obtained in the STAT are converted to an equivalent TER.
STAT tests are held regularly in the Perth metropolitan area and in country areas including Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Bunbury, Geraldton and Albany. For information on times and dates for tests to be held in WA contact TISC, telephone (08) 9318 8000. In other states, contact the Admissions Centre in that state.
