Mining Engineering
Your Career as a Mining Engineer
The most senior professional engineering qualification in the industry is that of a Mining Engineer. A Mining Engineering degree and a period of directed professional experience in industry is a requirement for appointment as a First Class Mine Manager in Western Australia.
Mine Managers and Mining Engineers are amongst the most highly rewarded people in the minerals industry with starting salaries usually exceeding those of most other graduates. The demand for Mining Engineers (especially those graduating from Curtin's Western Australian School of Mines) usually exceeds the number of graduates entering the industry and this position seems set to continue.
Mining Engineers acquire a very broad range of abilities, including expertise in aspects of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and civil engineering in addition to the more specific mining-related activities such as mining economics and finance, rock excavation engineering, mine design, environmental management, geology, resource estimation and safety management.
Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering)
The professional qualification for a Mining Engineer is the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng), which requires four years of successful full time study. The Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust) and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) accredit this degree.
The Mining Engineering degree at Curtin's Western Australian School of Mines is the only program offered in WA that is part of the Minerals Council of Australia's initiative Mining Education Australia. In other words, the program is recognised by the peak mining industry body as being world class (the only other programs in Australia being those at the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales).

Double Degree - Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance)
Outstanding applicants for admission to the Mining Engineering Program may consider undertaking a double degree with a Bachelor of Commerce.
This double degree combines the four-year Mining Engineering degree with the three-year Bachelor of Commerce degree into a single course that can be completed in five years. This course may provide career advantages to those who hope to progress to corporate management or financially based positions early in their careers.
Studies in Commerce include units in management, finance, economics, accounting, information systems and marketing. The first two years of the Commerce double degree are studied at the Bentley Campus in Perth. The following four semesters (two years) are studied at the Kalgoorlie Campus and the final two semesters (fifth year) at the Bentley Campus studying in Curtin's prestigious Business School.

Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Environmental Engineering)
This course offers a comprehensive training in environmental engineering for the mining industry. The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) is a principal provider of graduates for the mining industry and has a long history of success in providing employment for its graduates. This course is unique to WASM in its focus on mine site environmental engineering. It is multidisciplinary and appeals to those intending to work in teams and with the community in finding environmentally responsible solutions to important engineering problems that face the global mining industry. It also includes aspects of mining engineering, geology, mineral processing, biological sciences and environmental engineering and has an emphasis on mine site planning, rehabilitation and environmental management.

Bachelor of Science (Mining)
It is permissible to exit the course after the successful completion of three years of full time study and receive the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Mining. This qualification is suitable for the Quarry Manager's Certificate of Competency in WA and provides accelerated access to the Underground Supervisor's Certificate of Competency in WA.

Double Degree with Civil Construction
The double degree with the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering allows BSc (Mining) students to undertake, in five years of study, a second degree (BEng) in Civil and Construction Engineering. This combination provides graduates with a more rigorous background in civil technology than they would otherwise receive in the mining degree and provides advantages for those who wish to pursue careers in mining project or construction management.
