Your Career as a Minerals Engineer
The particular focus of minerals engineering and extractive metallurgy is on the extraction of metals from ores through the application of scientific and engineering principles for gold, iron ore, alumina, coal, mineral sands, nickel, copper and others.
Responsibilities include the selection and/or design and development of the best process to treat a particular ore, the efficient operation of the processing plant to convert ore into metal, and the disposal of waste, all in an environmentally acceptable manner.
Plant operators are responsible for the hands-on performance of a metallurgical plant, while metallurgical technicians may do laboratory work or assist metallurgists with projects.
Bachelor of Engineering (Minerals Engineering)
The first and second year of the BEng are available on Curtin University's Bentley campus while the final professional years of study are only available in Kalgoorlie to maximise the educational benefits to students and to provide the most suitable preparation for employment in the industry.

TISC Code: CUKDC (Bentley entry)
TISC Code: CKKDC (Kalgoorlie entry)
Double Degrees with Bachelor of Engineering (Minerals Engineering)
Outstanding applicants for admission to the Mining Engineering Program may consider undertaking a double degree.
Double Degree with Commerce
The double degree with Commerce combines the four-year Minerals Engineering degree with the three-year Bachelor of Commerce degree into a single course that can be completed in five years. This course may provide career advantages to those who hope to progress to corporate management or financially based positions early in their careers.
Studies in Commerce include units in management, finance, economics, accounting, information systems and marketing. The first two years of the Commerce double degree are studied at the Bentley Campus in Perth. The following four semesters (two years) are studied at the Kalgoorlie Campus and the final two semesters (fifth year) at the Bentley Campus studying in Curtin's prestigious Business School.
